History of the Hillsborough...

Many different cultures have lived along the shores of the Hillsborough River or have used its resources for food, shelter or transportation. The Mi'kmaq travelled the river by canoe to reach the north shore of the Island. Around 1720 people from France and Acadia began to settle along the river and establish farms. After the Island was won by the British in 1758, settlers from Ireland, Scotland and England began to arrive. Today the population of the Hillsborough reflects a blend of cultures and peoples who joined the Aboriginal inhabitants and early settlers over the centuries.
