Welcome to...
Hillsborough River Eco-Centre

The Hillsborough River Eco-Centre is located in the heart of Mount Stewart, directly beside the scenic Confederation Trail. The centre houses fascinating displays on the wildlife, environment and cultural history of the Hillsborough River area, including many intriguing historical artifacts as well as informative videos available for viewing in the mini-theatre.

Guided tours are available by request. An observation tower offers a beautiful view of the majestic Hillsborough Heritage River and nearby marshlands. The building also Ginger Snap's gift shop, a welcome centre with visitor information, washrooms and a public library and CAP site with public internet access.

The Hillsborough River Eco-centre was created by the Hillsborough River Area Development Corporation, a not-for-profit organization established to foster community development in the Hillsborough River watershed area. Working closely with the Hillsborough River Association, one of the main goals of this non-profit organization is the promotion and preservation of the Hillsborough River, the Island's first Canadian Heritage River.

After you have visited the eco-centre, we encourage you to explore the Hillsborough River area more fully. The nearby Pigot Trail provides an opportunity to see a wealth of birds, plants and other wildlife. The Confederation Trail offers a perfect opportunity to see the area by walking or cycling along the river edge. The more adventurous may want to explore the river close up by boating, canoeing or kayaking. Birdwatchers will enjoy the amazing variety of bird species in this area, due to the different habitats and the richness of the salt marshes. Watch for bald eagles soaring overhead.

We also offer great meeting & event space at a low cost. Call us for rental details.

Mount Stewart holds an annual eagle festival every June. For more information, please "like" our page on Facebook: Hillsborough River Eagle Festival.
